License/Certification Renewal

The Virginia State Board of Education requires all professional personnel to update professional knowledge periodically. Every professional license is issued with a five-year renewal cycle. License holders are not currently required to take a college or university course to renew a Board of Education license (as of July 1, 2015). License holders will need to complete 180 professional development points and all other renewal requirements set forth in regulation and statute. Each license holder is responsible for knowing and satisfying license renewal requirements. Failure to renew a license makes an individual ineligible for employment. The Virginia Board of Education website for licensure is: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching/licensure/index.shtml

The Virginia Licensure Renewal Manual is accessible on the following website: http://doe.virginia.gov/teaching/licensure/licensure_renewal_manual.pdf
