ACPS Governance Team Earns VSBA Master Board Designation

The Amelia County Public Schools Board and Superintendent recently earned the designation of VSBA Master Board. The Team attended four sessions totaling over twenty hours of professional development beginning in September and ending on December 9 2022. The discussions, facilitated by staff of the Virginia School Boards Association, focused on team building, improving communication, listening, and board building behaviors.  Dr. David Geraghty

 David A. Geraghty was first appointed as the interim school board representative for District 1 in April 2022 and was elected to complete the four-year term in November 2022 and now serves and vice chair.  Born in Michigan, he earned a BA in history and teaching from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1987.  He and his wife, Gail Geraghty, moved to Virginia in 1989 and to Amelia in 1990 when they landed teaching positions in the county's public schools. He taught Government, as well as Civics and US History for 12 years at ACHS before leaving to complete his MA in history from the University of Richmond and PhD in history from UVA. He is now in his 18th year at Longwood University where he teaches courses in early American history and prepares future middle and high school social studies teachers.

     The Geraghtys have two grown children, now starting families of their own.  Both kids attended ACPS and benefited from a variety of programs offered by the schools. Gail, now mostly retired, and David enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, travel, and time with their growing family.

Mrs. Robyn Whittington

Robyn D. Whittington was elected to serve as the District 2 School Board member in November of 2021. She grew up in Elevon, Virginia and is a graduate of the Essex County Public School system. Robyn was extremely active in the FFA throughout her education and credits the organization for her desire to develop her leadership skills while seeking a career in the natural sciences. She went on to graduate from Virginia Tech in 2004 with a degree in Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences. After college, she worked in small grains and soybean breeding and genetics research before serving as the Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent in Amelia County. In 2008, Robyn accepted a position teaching Biology, Environmental Science, and Horticulture at Amelia County High School. She taught until the birth of her first child.

Robyn and her husband, Colin, have 6 children. The oldest four are current ACPS students. Robyn and Colin can usually be found working on their certified seed and beef cattle farm, watching one of their children on a ballfield somewhere, or cooking up a big meal for their family at home.

Dr. Wes Eary represents District 3 on the Board. He graduated from Oak Lawn Community High School in 1975 and went on to obtain his Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from National College of Education in 1979, his Master of Arts in Science Teaching from Governors State University in 1981, his Education Specialist degree in Education Administration and Supervision from the University of Illinois in 1994, and his Doctor of Education in Education Administration and Supervision from Virginia Tech in 2016.

He began his career in education as a middle school math and science teacher, in addition to working with fourth and fifth grade students. He has been an assistant principal and principal in the public school setting, and the Director of Education in a private school for students with disabilities. He previously served as principal at the Amelia County Elementary and Middle Schools.

Currently retired, he ran for school board following the passing of his mother, for whom he served as caregiver. He lives with his wife, Dana, and between them have two sons and a daughter. One son, a graduate of Amelia High School, currently works as an aircraft mechanic in Chesterfield. Another son works as a buyer for Costco in the Atlanta area while his daughter serves as a physician in Dallas, Texas.

He enjoys working in his yard (recently joining the Amelia Garden Club) when it’s not too hot and is an avid movie fan when it is.

Kay was born and raised in Chesterfield County and attended CCPS, graduating from Manchester High School. She received her BA in Criminal Justice from Radford University in 1985. She married her husband, Randy, in 1988 and moved to Amelia. After commuting from Jetersville to the University of Richmond (UR) for three months, where she was employed as a dispatcher with the campus police department, she was blessed to find a position close to home with Crossroads Community Services Board as a training specialist. In 1992, after the birth of their first child, Kay left her job to be a stay-at- home mom. In 1999, with prompting from Dr. Helen Warriner-Burke, Kay ran for election to the Amelia School Board. She served two terms from 2000 to 2007. In November 2007 she was elected to the Amelia Co. Board of Supervisors and served a four-year term from 2008 to 2011. She is currently serving in her 12th year as the four-year old lead teacher at ABC Preschool in Amelia.

Kay and Randy have two grown children, both of whom attended ACPS from kindergarten through ACHS graduation. In her spare time Kay volunteers with the local Young Life ministry, enjoys playing golf, playing the guitar, and, most recently, spending time with her three-month old granddaughter.

Dr. Sarah Tanner-Anderson

Dr. Sarah Tanner-Anderson currently serves as Chair of the Amelia County School Board, representing District 5. After graduating from Amelia County High School in 1999, Dr. Tanner-Anderson went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts in English ('02) and Master of Arts in English, Education, and Writing ('07) from Longwood University.  She earned her Post Master's Administrative Certification ('11) and Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Policy Studies ('14) from The George Washington University. 
     A former principal, assistant principal, middle- and high-school English teacher, department and grade-level chair, high-school coach, and club sponsor, Dr. Tanner-Anderson has spent the past two decades supporting public education in the Commonwealth. She currently serves as Assistant Professor and Program Director of Educational Leadership at Longwood University.
     Dr. Tanner-Anderson and her college sweetheart, Peyton, have one son, a current ACES student. Whether on the field or on the court, you're likely to find them cheering him on across athletic seasons! Dr. Tanner-Anderson enjoys running, canoeing, reading, and spending time with her family.
